Pergola Staining

Pergola Staining in New Braunfels, TX

A pergola is the most sun-exposed timber on your property — every rafter takes direct overhead sun all day. It needs sealing more than anything else in the yard, and it's the thing most often forgotten.

The most exposed wood you own

There is no shade over a pergola. Every beam and rafter takes UV square-on from mid-morning to late afternoon, which is exactly the condition that opens up the grain and lets moisture cycle into the wood. Unsealed pergola timber greys and checks faster than fence pickets do, and because it's overhead, most people don't notice until it's well advanced.

Access is the hard part

Staining a pergola properly means getting the top faces of the rafters and the undersides too — which is awkward, slow, and the reason a lot of pergola staining jobs are done badly. We finish all faces rather than the ones that are easy to reach from a ladder.

While we're up there

Overhead timber is where you find split rafter ends and loose fasteners before they become a real problem. If we see something structural, you'll hear about it.

Common questions

How often should a pergola be re-stained?

Sooner than your fence. It takes the most direct sun of anything on the property, so it's usually the first timber to start looking tired.

Do you stain the underside of the rafters?

Yes. Doing only the visible top faces is how a pergola ends up protected on one side and weathering on the other.
