Deck Staining

Deck Staining in New Braunfels, TX

Horizontal surfaces take far more punishment than a fence — sun straight down, standing water, and everyone's feet. Decks need a different approach and a different product.

A deck is not a vertical fence lying down

Water runs off a fence. It sits on a deck. Sun hits a fence at an angle for part of the day and hits a deck square-on for most of it. Add foot traffic, furniture and a barbecue and you have a surface that wears out several times faster than the fence twenty feet away. That's why a deck needs a finish chosen for abrasion and standing water, not just for colour.

Prep is most of the job

Old finish, mildew in the grain, tannin bleed around fasteners and the grey layer on top all have to come off before anything new goes down, or the new coat is just a lid on the old problem. We clean, brighten and let the boards dry to the right moisture level before we stain.

Getting the boards to last

Where boards have cupped or where fasteners have popped, we'll flag it before staining rather than finishing over it. A beautiful stain on a board that needs replacing is money spent twice.

Common questions

How often does a deck need re-staining?

More often than a fence — usually noticeably sooner, because of the sun exposure and traffic. When water stops beading on the boards, it's due.

Can you stain a deck that's already peeling?

Yes, but the peeling finish has to come off first. Staining over a failing film just means the new coat lifts with the old one. We'll assess whether it needs stripping or whether a clean-and-brighten will get there.
