Pergola or pavilion?
A pergola has open rafters — it breaks the sun, gives the space definition and takes climbing plants, but it won't keep you dry. A pavilion has a solid roof, so it works in rain as well as sun and can carry a fan or lighting, but it's a bigger structure with bigger footings and a bigger number. Most people arrive asking for one and leave wanting the other once they understand the difference.
Attached or freestanding
Attaching to the house is often cheaper and makes the structure feel like part of the home, but it commits you to a location and needs the ledger done properly. Freestanding costs more in posts and footings and gives you the whole yard to place it in. Where the afternoon sun comes from usually settles the argument.
Built in cedar, finished before assembly
Overhead timber is the most sun-punished wood on a property, so we seal it before it goes up — including the faces that will be impossible to reach once the rafters are set.
Common questions
What's the difference between a pergola and a pavilion?
A pergola has open rafters and gives you filtered shade; a pavilion has a solid roof and gives you full cover from sun and rain. A pavilion is the larger, more expensive structure and needs more substantial footings.
Will a pergola actually provide shade in Texas?
Partial. Rafter spacing and orientation determine how much — tighter spacing and running the rafters across the sun's path gives you noticeably more. If you want full shade and rain cover, you want a pavilion.
